Yuta Tamura

Yuta Tamura is a self-taught painter from Hyogo Prerfecture, Japan.

His paintings are inspired by the pixel characters used in 20th century video games. It is a tribute to the culture that fascinated him in his childhood. His studio contains a large collection of Japanese children’s toys from the late 20th century, as well as toys of Dragon Quest characters designed by late Akira Toriyama.

In my opinion, unlike the high-resolution character images of modern video games, Tamura’s motif of Pixel Characters does not look human in still. However, as they move around in the game, the Pixel Characters become lively friends, enemies, or even themselves in the player’s mind.

Tamura states in his artist statement that the theme of his creation is Memento Mori. It is a great shock to us when we realize that Pixel Characters, who at first glance appear to be nothing more than low-resolution human figures, die in a video game and never come back to life in the video game storyline. Such a structure is indeed an expression of Memento Mori.

Tamura is completely unknown in Japan, but is already a popular painter in Taiwan.
